MANAGER, TECHNICAL DESIGN

What is my role?

As a Technical Design Manager, you will manage the technical design team and pattern maker to ensure on time delivery of quality product that meets the customer’s fit/function and construction standards, through fully commercialized tech packs and product. This position will be responsible for fit and maintaining consistency of fit standards.

What You'll Do

  • Lead a team of Technical Designers with experience levels ranging from Senior, Associate, and Assistant.  
  • Manage all product technical aspects for all product area from development through fit to end customer use
  • Must be able to work closely with pattern cutters, sample sewers and factories to achieve viable, commercial product
  • Must be able to manage the technical design team to achieve multi product, multi label calendars throughout both development and production cycles and provide updates to internal teams & partners
  • Mentor and train team members in efficient and accurate methods to create, maintain and house technical information
  • Partner closely with design and development team to create product that accurately reflects their vision whilst maintaining feasible production methods and cost and production parameters 
  • Ensure that technical designers execute accurate interpretations and translations of designs intent through product specifications and technical packages
  • Be able to produce accurate work at all stages and all levels from the team for all customers and all accounts
  • Be able to organize and execute fittings
  • Provide recommendations to teams for better construction method that will enhance design/quality/costs where necessary 
  • Responsible for end fit of all product – must be strong in conviction of adherence to standards and communication across all teams 
  • Complete specification packages, including illustration, flat sketch with measurements, fabric, construction details, sewing instructions, trim sheets and special applications
  • Make or recommend appropriate adjustments to patterns as necessary
  • Communicate with vendors and retailers to work through specification, construction or fabrication issues
  • Analyze technical fit, balance, ease, quality and pattern of garments ensuring that products are developed in a manner consistent with established standards
  • Provide detailed follow up and communication on technical issues, fits and pre-production status to key individuals 
  • Identify problems and issues and develop solutions and maintain accountability for product from development through production
  • Organize and update tracking reports and maintain back up files 
  • Provide reports for departmental overviews regarding products and department efficiencies
  • Manage workloads and calendars

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred 
  • 10+ years’ experience in technical design, pattern making, fitting and spec packages
  • Experience leading, managing, and mentoring a team of Technical Designers 
  • In-depth technical knowledge across apparel categories, specifically for patterns/fit, grading, garment construction, and tech pack creation
  • Comprehensive understanding of physical fit for multiple demographics (men’s, women’s, plus, boys, girls, infant and toddler; evaluation of body size, shape and the relationship of clothing on the target body)
  • Understanding of product engineering and manufacturing process
  • Ability to prioritize workflow based on product development calendar, timelines, deliverables, and deadlines 
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills on MS Office, Adobe Illustrator, and PLM systems; good understanding of Gerber system for converting patterns
  • Strong customer service orientation and interpersonal skills when working with cross functional teams
  • Strong ability to problem solve and handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment, being flexible to changes and/or additional needs that may be required by customers
  • Must be detail oriented with strong organizational skills
