The Designer I, Womens Sweaters is responsible for leading the full design process from implementation of ideas to finished product with approximately 50-60 styles per season. Provide market research insight to build business in white space areas and to update old business. Managing and providing mentorship to direct report(s).

 

Responsibilities:

  • Own the full (sweater) product design process including market research, yarn selection & stitching, designing based on initial concept, hand sketching, flat sketching, specing, creating tech packs, color & trim selection and ensuring that product is designed to meet target customer's fit criteria
  • Research current best sellers and trends to develop appropriate styles and enhance brand right business growth
  • Work closely with the design team and cross-functional partners to ensure a cohesive product line is realized and desired outcome is achieved
  • Maintain the progression of design in the Design Directors absence
  • Establish full working knowledge of yarn selection and finishes; provide direction to align seasonal concept with yarn trends and implement stitch techniques and construction that will execute and create the best 1st proto and market sample
  • Adhere to the framework of the seasonal line needs, to reflect a balance between fashion/trend as well as core and emerging businesses for presentation to and selection by the merchant team
  • Adhere to OD guidelines, new calendar/ process charters and be a champion for change in adapting new processes to benefit the organization
  • Own proto and market sample review for sweater knit classification; evaluate all adopted styles for aesthetic, fit, construction, and quality
  • Possess strong knowledge of garment construction and lead fit sessions alongside tech partner to help solve all problems that may occur during proto sample and SRS stage; responsible for final approval of sample fit to ensure production-ready market samples

 

Qualifications:

  • BFA in Fashion Design
  • 7+ years in Apparel Design related experience
  • Management experience is a plus
  • Knits/sweaters experience required  
  • Must have proficient knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop, Excel, Web PDM/PLM
  • Ability to sketch and draw flats by hand and in Illustrator
  • Strong knowledge of Knitwear garment construction & stitches and the ability to explain the nuance of fully fashioned knitwear to top executives
  • Ability to build positive, collaborative relationships cross functionally and as a manager
  • Adept at the working place, multi-tasking multiple seasons and juggling priorities in an organized, flexible manner with accuracy & attention to detail.
  • Must have a clear understanding of the Tommy aesthetic and ability to identify key trends and determine how they relate to our brand
  • Strong time management, organizational skills & problem solving skills
  • Ability to work long hours and some weekends during seasonal deadlines
  • Ability to handle stressful situations while remaining professional
  • 3D design skillset, a plus
  • Responsible for sample expenses for sweater department
  • Some domestic & overseas travel required
