Hazardous Materials Supervisor 

 

Overview

The Hazardous Material Specialist will be responsible for contributing to the Hazmat/ORMD program for Domestic & International Transportation.  We’re looking for an energetic person with a dynamic personality.  Must be outgoing willing to learn and adapt. This role will provide technical expertise and guidance to assure the safe and compliant transportation of regulated materials for the global supply chain, while supporting the day-to-day dangerous goods compliance program. This Specialist also supplements compliance auditing, monitoring, and exception functions, and implements approved policies to maintain compliance, provides guidance on material classification, shipping documentation, packaging and internal and external customer inquiries, and provides approved training across all URBN DC’s and documentation of training rosters. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide operational support for the HAZMAT/ Dangerous Goods Program
  • Ability to present safety trainings for large groups
  • Ensure proper maintenance of corporate inventory of products subject to HAZMAT/Dangerous Goods rules
  • Provide product identification and classification guidance for DOT, ADR, ICAO, IATA, IMO, DGR etc
  • Review and/or establish/coordinate existing policies and practices to address: compliance (identification, classification, packaging, marking, labeling, and documentation) for the movement of dangerous goods.
  • Provide day-to-day regulatory guidance on packaging specs, marking, labeling, shipping documents
  • Collaborates with Business Units,  Distribution, Package Engineers, Transportation and Regulatory/Compliance
  • Assist Business Units to put into place hazardous material/dangerous goods processes and proper documents to ensure that corporate policies are being complied with.
  • Work with Global Trade Compliance, DC’s & Transportation to develop/implement policies, SOP’s, training materials, and controls to support a culture of compliance with applicable international regulations for  the preparation and transportation of dangerous goods
  • Conduct site audits to identify compliance with Dangerous Goods Policies and Procedures, and to initiate corrective action, process improvements, and simplification.
  • Identify new regulations and provide gap analysis to changing regulations that will affect policy and procedure to ensure compliance
  • Identify process improvements and partner with internal / external groups to deliver sustainable cost reductions and/or service improvements
  • Assess organizational needs for data & reporting and optimize opportunities for automation and enhance department effectiveness
  • Develop and support operations by monitoring and analyzing performance.
  • Develop opportunities to improve overall management, packaging, warehousing and transportation of Hazmat goods.   

 

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of national and international dangerous goods regulations
  • Packaging testing knowledge for product and package integrity
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with regulatory agencies and business leaders
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Discretion with confidential or sensitive information
  • Ability to grasp concepts quickly and reduce them to practice with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • Penchant for action, a high level of professionalism, good judgment/decision making, an appropriate level of assertiveness and ambition, and an ability to influence key business stakeholders

 

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • Knowledge of US and International dangerous goods regulations
  • Audit experience for Dangerous Goods compliance or related audit program
  • Laws, regulations, and ordinances hazardous materials and disposal of hazardous materials, and emergency response procedures
  • 2+ years’ experience in dangerous goods transportation classification and packaging compliance. (DOT, ICAO, IATA, IMO, DGR)
