Role Mandate:
This position supports the Buying Team’s ability to achieve sales, gross margin, inventory, and turnover goals for assigned categories of merchandise while learning the long-range business strategy within the area of responsibility. The Assistant Buyer works closely with the buying and merchandising support teams in the execution of product selection, assortment planning, vendor communication, inventory productivity management, and marketing of specific lines/categories to significantly improve profitability and maximize shareholder value
Responsibilities:
Merchandising • Assists in vendor selection and in developing and maintaining strong vendor partnerships • Setting up of new items in the item database • Develops sales unit performance reports • Aids in the preparation and ensures merchandise samples are maintained accordingly
Purchasing/Allocation/Replenishment • Assists in analyzing class performance, planned class penetration, and average retail by class • Manages the timely placement and maintenance of purchase orders • Provides analysis to support micro-merchandising strategies
Financial Planning • Provides information for the preliminary development of the vendor / store matrix •Assists in providing analysis for and participates in the Business Review
Open-To-Buy Monitoring • Assists in the development and maintenance of the PO checkbook • Bi-monthly forecasting of sales and inventories through the OTB review process •Executes the markdown projection process and provides information for the projection and negotiation of vendor allowance
Pricing and Marketing • Provides data analysis for price changes and assists in entering changes, online and in a timely manner
Qualifications Qualifications • University or College degree or commensurate retail experience • Minimum 1 year assistant buyer experience or Saks Executive Training Program. • Sense of urgency, flexibility, ability to multi-task. • Strong interest in learning and applying retail math concepts, including elements of markup, margin planning, open to buy, and inventory productivity measures (WOS, T/O, GMROI) • Strong written and oral communication skills. • Excellent computer skills including MS Word and Excel.
