Position Summary:

The Retail Development Program – Design prepares you for your first position as an Assistant Apparel Designer, responsible for assisting in the designing, developing and executing of product designs that achieve Belk’s Private Brand objectives, and overall product strategy.  Associates will participate in live training workshops, webinars, on-the-job project assignments, and job shadowing to learn other parts of the business. Participants are also matched with mentors to help acclimate to Belk, develop on the job, and identify future career possibilities. 

The Retail Development Program – Design will hire candidates in our Charlotte, NC headquarters.  Participants benefit by having a large network of peers across other functions in the Retail Development Program. 

On the Job

  • Work in a fast paced, dynamic, test and learn environment
  • Help provide the creative vision for a specific product category or brand
  • Evaluate and prioritize all trend information
  • Assist in creating create trend boards, color direction, and compelling product assortments
  • Partner with team to create development sketches for new private brand styles
  • Interact with the Merchandising teams, Trend Director, Overseas Offices and key vendors to exchange ideas, gain expertise, and streamline the development process
  • Help manage systems, libraries, and projects in accordance with company policy and practices

Requirements/Qualifications:

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Strong academic performance preferred.
  • Must have graduated within 6 months of June 2018 and able to start full time June 2018
  • Ability to inspire ideas/new concepts outside current assortments
  • Strong fashion sense and ability to translate merchant/ market input into product
  • Open to learning, adapts to changing circumstances and reprioritizes tasks as to meet goals
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and partners at all levels of the organization
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and not require work authorization sponsorship by Belk for this position now or in the future
